He drove her down to a theater in town And they journeyed for seventy years She had four children who still can listen to their Song when the red bird appears The love of Ken and Irene Sweet smell of jasmine and what we were having Those nights spent out on the lanai Kiss on the cheek every time we would meet And that's what I’ll remember you by The love of Ken and Irene Forces of darkness try as they might To erase their memory But look in the eyes of a great-grandchild And it’s so easy to see The love of Ken and Irene The love of Ken and Irene

about

Today would have been my grandparents' 71st wedding anniversary.

On April 16th, 2020, my grandmother (Irene "Sammie" Hooker, [née Brafford], 89) passed away of COVID-19 virus. Just ten days later, my grandfather (Kenneth C. Hooker, 91) or "Papa" as I called him, also passed away. Like so many families, ours was unable to properly grieve our great losses in person due to the pandemic. I found catharsis in writing this song about two people who meant so much to me, my family, their friends, and each other.

I am donating 100% of the download proceeds from "The Love Of Ken And Irene"—recorded at home in lockdown—in their memory to Direct Relief, an excellent charity mainly providing medical supplies with an emphasis on clinics serving at-risk and underserved populations. Every aspect of Direct Relief’s organizational capacity is devoted to the coronavirus response.

The challenges of 2020 recommenced for my family when on August 29th, we also lost my grandmother on my mom's side (Loretta A. Arnold, [née Wilson], 90). I would like to dedicate the proceeds from this song to her memory as well.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have grown up with such wonderful, loving grandparents.
